The STABLE versions of gnucash are numbered as 1.6.x 

The 1.7.x versions are NOT stable! Do NOT download or 
install gnucash version 1.7.x unless you enjoy pain and 
suffering!  They probably won't work for you!  These
are for developers ONLY!

If you want to use gnucash on a day to day basis, pick
the latest version in the 1.6.x series.  The 1.6.x series
are meant for day to day use.
